Marking 8 Years: Lazerian’s Heartfelt Tribute to the Manchester 22 Arena Attack

Today marks eight years since the Manchester Arena bombing — a tragic event that claimed 22 lives and injured many more on May 22 2017. It was a moment that shocked the city, but also revealed the strength and resilience that Manchester is renowned for.

The morning after the attack, Lazerian founder Liam Hopkins created a sculpture — a five-foot black paper heart — as a direct and personal response to what had happened. Made from paper and glue, the materials were chosen to reflect the emotional fragility of the time, while also recognizing the strength that unites the city and its community.

Painted black as a sign of mourning and respect, the statue also carries golden yellow threads — a subtle nod to Manchester’s symbolic color. This is a way of showing that although the city has been greatly impacted, this is not due to tragedy alone. Yellow is a quiet but optimistic signal of unity and support.

The heart was placed on King Street in Manchester, and kept for three weeks. Although not designed as a formal installation, it is a space for the community to gather, reflect and pay respects. Many left flowers or messages; the others just remained silent. The statue stands as a focal point of collective mourning and remembrance.

Once in the city center, the heart is auctioned, and all proceeds are donated Forever Manchestera charity supporting community projects in Greater Manchester. It was purchased by Affleck Palacewhich still stands today as a permanent fixture among other creative tributes to the city — including murals and artwork that reflect Manchester’s cultural identity.

The work was never intended to be long-lasting or complicated. It was created quickly, in response to grief, as a way to make sense of what had happened and to offer something – however small – to the people of Manchester.

Eight years later, Hearts remains one of Lazerian’s most meaningful works. It is a reminder not only of the lives lost, but also of how Manchester responded: with strength, care and unity.
